Short CV
Christos Stavrakos is born and grew up in Athens but has Spartan origins.
He made his bachelor (History and Archaeology) at the University of Athens and his PhD at the University of Vienna (Institute of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies). His PhD (published in Harrassowitz Verlag, Wiesbaden) is titled “Die byzantinischen Bleisiegel mit Familiennamen aus der Sammlung des Numismatischen Museums Athen”.
He is full-professor of Byzantine History in the Department of History and Archaeology at the University of Ioannina (Epirus) and director of the post-graduate programme “Byzantine Studies”. For two consecutive terms (2013-2018) he was chair of the Department and member of the senate of the University.
His publications and books (all in German and English) are mostly about byzantine lead seals, coins, and byzantine and post-byzantine inscriptions.
He participated and presented the results of his research in International Congresses and Symposia in Athens, Princeton, Sofia, Belgrade, Istanbul, Vienna, Paris, London, St. Petersburg, Thessaloniki, Washington DC).
He is granted with fellowships from the University of Athens, State of Austria and Dumbarton Oaks (Trustees of Harvard University).
He is co-ordinator of the international Commission of Byzantine Sigillography and he collaborates as author with Dumbarton Oaks for the publication of next volumes of the lead seals of its collection. He is also editor of the series “Byzantios. Studies in Byzantine History and Civilization” (Brepols Publishing House) and the new editor of the Series “Studies in Byzantine Sigillography”. Since August 2022 he is Secretary of the Association Internationale des Études Byzantines and since October 2022 internal member of the rectorate of the University of Ioannina.
