Andrea Babuin was born in Aviano (AFB), Italy in 1966. He is a graduate of the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Udine (1994) and holds a PhD in History from the University of Ioannina (2009). He has taught at the Universities of Udine, Milan and Venice and since 2014 took up a place as lecturer in Byzantine Art at the University of Ioannina. He worked in research projects of the Istituto Italiano di Studi Filosofici of Naples, in the Fondazione Giorgio Cini of Venice and for the Università Ca' Foscari of Venice. He has published a series of studies on the Byzantine navy, the Byzantine army and its weapons, Byzantine iconography, Byzantine monumental painting and sculpture. His main research interests are daily life and material culture in Byzantium, the Byzantine army and the art of the Palaeologan era.
